Poll: Do you listen to movies or TV over headphones?




I suppose it's still a fair assumption that more people listen to music than movies with headphones, but there has to be a growing audience listening to movies, TV shows, and YouTube videos via their headphones. Thanks to the booming popularity of tablets, might the ratio of movies-to-music listening time be moving away from music? Or not?


I watch a lot of movies at home with headphones on. They present a level of detail that you can get from speakers only when you play them really loud. With headphones, I don't have to crank the volume. They're also handy when other people in my apartment are sleeping.


If you watch movies or TV shows on an
iPad, headphones are the most likely way you'd listen. Some folks probably use a single Bluetooth speaker for movie sound with
tablets, but then again, if you have a decent home theater you're more likely to listen with speakers. Do you watch movies on your computer, and if you do, do you prefer headphones or speakers? Do your headphones sound better than your computer speakers? Of course, where you watch may skew the headphone vs. speaker preference one way or another.

First, Disney bought Lucasfilm and "Star Wars" fans everywhere had mixed feelings. Then, a rumor became reality as J.J Abrams signed on to direct the next "Star Wars" movie. Now, almost everybody is feeling hopeful about the future of the franchise.


To put a cherry on the sci-fi sundae, we've now been told that a series of character spin-off movies are in the works that will follow along with individuals from the series.



When the idea of "Star Wars" spin-off films first came up, everybody was talking about Yoda. Now, Entertainment Weekly is saying the first two side projects will follow young versions of Han Solo and Boba Fett. The rumor comes with plenty of caveats about how plans can change, meaning those two movies aren't set in stone.


If Disney came knocking at your door and asked you which character it should start the spin-offs with, which would you choose? You might want to see Yoda when he was less wrinkly or meet Princess Leia as she learns how to braid her hair. Some characters should be pretty easy to rule out. I'm guessing "Jabba the Hutt: The High School Years" isn't likely to happen.


Maybe you're rooting for a different character entirely. Chewbacca, anyone? After surviving the "Star Wars" holiday special, I don't think I want to see much more of Wookiee life. Which "Star Wars" character deserves the first spin-off movie? Vote in our poll and talk it out in the comments.

Options for managing browser tabs in OS X



Tabbed browsing is one of the more useful features to make it to Web browsers. However, as with using single windows you might inadvertently close one and need to restore it. While you can create a new tab and then peruse the browser history to find a link to the content it contained, an easier option is to use the built-in tab restoration options in your browser.


To do this, there are two hotkeys to keep in mind. The first is the classic Command-Z for undoing an action, which in
Safari will undo a recently closed tab in a specific window; however, this only pertains to the single most recent tab closed. While this allows you to restore separately closed tabs in different windows, for a given window you can only restore the last closed tab.

The Opera browser's tab options are organized in the Window menu, and provide quicker ways to reopen them than Apple's Safari.

On the other hand, alternative browsers like Chrome,
Firefox, and Opera use a common hotkey, Shift-Command-T, for undoing closed tabs, but unlike Command-Z in Safari, subsequent presses of this hotkey will continue restoring other closed tabs.


In addition to restoring tabs sequentially, Chrome, Opera, and Firefox all have options to browse through collections of recently closed tabs for a given window, so you can quickly reopen either some or all of them. These options are available in the History menu for Chrome and Firefox, and in the Window menu for Opera.


Beyond managing tabs, you may also wish to restore entire closed windows. In this respect, while Safari has an option to reopen a recently closed window, as with its tab management it will only do so for the most recent window. On the other hand, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera manage closed windows as collections of tabs. This blends well with their existing tab management options to allow you to restore any set of tabs as a single window. These options are available in the History menu of Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and Opera.


While Safari only allows a single tab or window to be restored, this is not necessarily a hindrance--it just requires you to be on top of any inadvertent closures and quickly restore them when they happen. Safari's browser history and bookmarks should be enough to restore other recently closed content; however, if you need specific tab organizations or regularly find yourself needing to restore multiple tabs, then Firefox, Chrome, and Opera offer more robust options than Apple's Safari browser.

Mobile Internet data traffic to grow 13-fold by 2017, says Cisco



There are a number of different predictions floating around about how many Internet-connected devices there will be worldwide within the next few years. But regardless of those numbers, we can all be sure that mobile Internet data traffic is going to explode exponentially as well.


Cisco Systems has chimed in with its latest predictions through 2017 in regard to mobile data traffic -- and the forecasts don't hold back.


According to Cisco's Visual Networking Index report covering 2012 through 2017, the networking giant is predicting that global mobile data traffic will jump 13 times, to a rate of 11.2 exabytes consumed globally per month at an annual run rate of 134 exabytes.


To put this in perspective, the monthly rate for 2012 was 0.9 exabytes of mobile data traffic.


Doug Webster, vice president of Service Provider Networking Marketing at Cisco, explained further in prepared remarks that this projection equals "more than 46 times the total amount of mobile IP traffic just a few years ago in 2010."


He continued:


With such dramatic adoption, we are rapidly approaching the time when nearly every network experience will be a mobile one and, more often than not, a visual one as well. This trend is a result of the seemingly insatiable demand by consumers and businesses alike to achieve the benefits gained when connecting people, data, and things in an Internet of Everything.



Cisco expects that from now through 2017, mobile devices such as smartphones and
tablets (but also laptops) will account for the overwhelming bulk of this traffic.


One point also worth highlighting is that it appears researchers are forecasting mobile data traffic to increase sharply because of more devices online -- not users.


By 2017, Cisco is predicting there will be 5.2 billion mobile users -- up from 4.3 billion in 2012. But they also predicted that there will be more than 10 billion connected devices (including more than 1.7 billion M2M connections) within four years -- up from 7 billion total in 2012.


However, there are expected to be some major changes in demographics as well -- especially in emerging markets. -- which could provide new business opportunities for everyone from mobile OEMs to service providers.


Specifically, researchers predicted that we'll see the highest growth rate for mobile data traffic in the Middle East and Africa, with a 17.3-fold increase. But the Asia-Pacific region is expected to dominate with the most mobile traffic overall, accumulating 5.3 exabytes per month by 2017.

AT&T adds four markets to 4G LTE network

AT&T announced today that it has added four new markets to its 4G LTE network.



Now, customers in Albany, NY; Calhoun and Dalton, Ga.; and Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Va. will be able to experience the carrier's faster network speed.


With these four new areas, this brings AT&T's total coverage to 141 markets, which includes 170 million people.


While its great to see AT&T's network expanding, the numbers still lag behind Verizon Wireless. Its 4G LTE network covers 476 markets and 273.5 million people.

How can Amy Poehler help Best Buy during the Super Bowl?

In the first quarter of today's Big Game featuring big people doing big things to each other, Amy Poehler will be trying to do big things for Best Buy.


Unlike the players -- who will probably be tied 3-3 in a dull defensive battle when Amy appears -- Poehler has one shot to give the Best Buy brand a shot in arm. Or perhaps a shot at redemption.


Best Buy has been crossing some turbulent oceans recently, so securing the services of one of America' funniest actors is a pleasant coup.


The company has released a sneak preview (embedded here) of Poehler asking questions that are sweetly self-referential, so it may be that this theme will continue during today's spot.



More Technically Incorrect



The idea seems to be that whatever questions you have, those nice people in blue polo shirts will have the answer for you.


In order to reinforce this dream, Best Buy has co-opted the hashtag #infiniteanswers on Twitter.


Naturally, there have already been slight setbacks with this strategy.


For example, a twitterer called Jonathan has already offered: "#infiniteanswers not at your Willimar MN location I have seen smarter things come out of a dead animal."


Worse, another tweeter, Billy Byler seemed to be experiencing a little humorous bile: "Every answer was 'Not sure. Check Amazon.' @BestBuy: Amy Poehler visited us & had A LOT of questions. http://youtu.be/PcmW8HCuLo8 #infiniteanswers."

NASA marks 10th anniversary of Columbia disaster



Evelyn Husband-Thompson, widow of Columbia Commander Rick Husband, remembers the fallen crew and the devastating impact of the 2003 disaster in a ceremony Friday at the Space Mirror Memorial honoring fallen astronauts.

In an emotional memorial service, the widow of the shuttle Columbia's commander recalled their last meeting the day before launch and the devastation the families felt when they learned their loved ones had perished during re-entry 10 years ago Friday.


Speaking in front of the Space Mirror Memorial to fallen astronauts at the Kennedy Space Center's visitor complex, Evelyn Husband-Thompson shared memories of Columbia commander Rick Husband and his six crewmates, saying how proud the families were of the crew's accomplishments during their 16-day science mission.


The night before landing, the families "shared a meal together at a local restaurant," she said. "I went to bed with the NASA (television) channel left on quietly in the background and I fell asleep, thanking God for the great mission, and I was so excited for the reunion with my husband."


Instead, the families listened in disbelief at the shuttle's 3-mile-long runway the next morning as it became clear Columbia had suffered a catastrophic failure during re-entry.


"February 1, 2003, became a traumatic, shocking day," Husband-Thompson said. "Anticipating a joyful homecoming of our crew, we were jolted in the viewing area into a nightmarish stroll of fear, uncertainty, and horror that led to a crushing announcement that the crew had perished during re-entry.


"Words of sorrow, efforts to comfort, even fathoming the magnitude of loss was overwhelming that day. Looks of disbelief from one family member to another brought little comfort. The shock was so intense that even tears were not freely able to fall. They would come in the weeks, months, and years to follow, in waves and in buckets."


And in the months and years that followed, she said, "the human spirit, created by God, began to minister to my family."


"Friends and family cared for us, and countless thousands of others prayed for us. To all of you, I want to say thank you.... God bless the families of STS-107. May our broken hearts continue to heal and may beauty continue to replace the ashes. God bless you."


In an interview before the ceremony, Husband-Thompson said she remains a strong supporter of NASA and the manned space program.


"NASA's an amazing group of folks and they have been hugely supportive of us," she said. "It was Rick's dream since he was 4 years old, and obviously what happened was devastating. But it doesn't stop the cause of space exploration. I totally support it. It's contributed so much to our world."


Several hundred space managers, engineers, and acquaintances gathered to mark the 10th anniversary of the Columbia disaster, the 27th anniversary of Challenger's loss on Jan. 28, 1986, and the 46th anniversary of a launch pad fire on Jan. 27, 1967, that killed three Apollo astronauts.

Their names are carved in the Space Mirror Memorial, along with others who lost their lives in the pursuit of spaceflight.


Columbia was destroyed during re-entry when hot gas penetrated the shuttle's left wing through a hole in a leading edge heat shield panel. The hole was caused by the impact of foam insulation that fell from the ship's external tank during launch 16 days earlier.


As a postaccident investigation would show, NASA had a long history of problems with "foam shedding," but continued to launch shuttles without a thorough understanding of the implications.


"In looking back, there was no malicious intent by any engineer or manager in the decisions they made that led to the loss of Columbia and her crew," said Kennedy Space Center Director Robert Cabana, a veteran shuttle commander. "They were doing their very best to be successful. But we are human and oftentimes, when lacking sufficient data, we make poor decisions. And that results in events like Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia."


Cabana said NASA had learned from its mistakes "and we are going on to even greater accomplishments."


"But we must never forget the hard lessons that we learned in the past," he told the crowd. "It's important that we pause to remember and reflect. We must do our very best to prevent something like that from ever happening again. Too much is at stake."


William Gerstenmaier, director of manned space operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington, echoed Cabana's sentiments, saying the Columbia accident "wasn't caused by a single event or a single person, but by a series of technical and cultural missteps stemming all the way back to the first shuttle launch in 1981 when ice and foam first struck the (orbiter)."


"This was a first indication we had a design problem," he said. "But we continued to fly without fully investigating the consequences of foam hitting the orbiter. We continued to lose foam on many missions and this reinforced the idea that all was well. We did not stay hungry, and we didn't deeply analyze the implications of foam being released at precisely the wrong moment."


He cautioned engineers to stay vigilant, to "recognize even the smallest potential flaw can become a big problem."


"In honor of the Columbia crew, it is our job to be aware of the technical subtleties and be creative about understanding them and the underlying problems," he said. "Even small problems can surface as major failures."


At the conclusion of the memorial ceremony, three NASA T-38 jets roared overhead in a "missing man" formation. Gospel singer BeBe Winans performed his song "Ultimate Sacrifice," and Husband-Thompson, assisted by Gerstenmaier, Cabana, and Eileen Collins, commander of the first post-Columbia shuttle mission, placed a wreath at the base of the Space Mirror.

Friday Poll: Will the Z10 save BlackBerry?




The release of the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone will be remembered as either a breath of new life for the company or a last gasp as it fell into irrelevance. By all accounts, the Z10 is a tremendous step forward in design and hardware over previous BlackBerrys, but it's coming at a time when the smartphone market is crowded with established contenders with massive app stores already in place.


CNET contributor Ben Parr says that the Z10 and its keyboard-wielding buddy Q10 face a major deficit on the app front. He argues that iOS and
Android have an insurmountable lead in the app race, meaning the Z10 will never attract the new customers BlackBerry needs to grow and survive.



Others suggest the smaller app store and lack of popular apps like Instagram don't matter for a company that specializes in the enterprise market. Some expect the BlackBerry app store to catch up over time.


No matter how you look at it, the Z10 faces fierce competition. Its security and management features make it an attractive buy for businesses, but some have already deserted the BlackBerry platform. CNET reader loose_screw writes, "My company, and many others that I know of, have already switched from BB to iPhone/Android. I don't think a new BB phone is going to make us switch back to BB."


The Z10 and its modern design has been a long time coming, but we'll have to wait and see if it and the Q10 can pull BlackBerry back from tottering on the brink. Is the Z10 the smartphone savior BlackBerry needs to save the company? Vote in our poll and talk it out in the comments.

CES gives Dish Hopper with Sling 'Best of Show' award



The Consumer Electronics Association, a trade organization that represents 2,000 technology companies and runs the International Consumer Electronics Show, announced today that the Dish Hopper with Sling HD DVR is joining the Razer Edge gaming tablet as a co-winner of the 2013 Best of Show in the CES awards program. The CEA also designated the Dish Hopper a 2013 Design and Engineering Award Honoree at CES.


CNET, which produced the Best of Show awards program under contract with the CEA, originally voted the Dish Hopper with Sling as the winner. The Dish Hopper product was taken out of the competition owing to CNET's parent company CBS' ongoing litigation with Dish over its AutoHop ad-skipping technology, which allows customers to record the entire prime-time lineup and automatically skip commercials. After the Dish Hopper product was removed from consideration, CNET's editors voted to give the Best of Show award to the Razer Edge gaming
tablet.


CBS, as well as NBC (Comcast), Fox (News Corp.) and ABC (Disney), have filed suit against Dish Network over its AutoHop feature. The networks maintain that the ad-skipping feature will destroy the advertiser-supported ecosystem and that Dish doesn't have the right to tamper with advertising from broadcast replays for its own economic and commercial advantage.


"CNET is not going to give an award or any other validation to a product which CBS is challenging as illegal, other networks believe to be illegal and one court has already found to violate the copyright act in its application. Beyond that, CNET will cover every other product and service on the planet," a CBS spokesperson said.


CNET's product reviews policy states that its editors will not review any product or service that is currently involved in active litigation with CBS Corporation with respect to the legality of the product or service. The Dish Hopper and Aereo TV streaming service currently fall into that category.


The CEA filed an amicus brief supporting Dish's versus the broadcast networks last week before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals -- along with the Computer and Communications Industry Association and the Internet Association -- arguing: "In sum and substance, the Hopper merely enables the consumer to perform the same actions as the old VCRs or other DVRs, just more efficiently." The brief relies heavily on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Sony v. Universal City Studios, saying that recording TV programming for personal use is legal and the devices that make the recordings are not liable for copyright infringement.


In a statement, CEA president Gary Shapiro said that "making television easier to watch is not against the law. It is simply pro-innovation and pro-consumer."


CEA said that it plans to issue a request for proposal (RFP) to identify a new partner to run the Best of
CES awards program.


"CES has enjoyed a long and productive partnership with CNET and the Best of CES awards," said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, events and conferences for CEA. "However, we are concerned the new review policy will have a negative impact on our brand should we continue the awards relationship as currently constructed. We look forward to receiving new ideas to recognize the 'best of the best' products introduced at the International CES."

Backblaze, an online backup start-up, announced plans to release an iPhone app in coming weeks to let customers tap into their files.




"Having restored 2.5 billion files for our customers, we found that 22 percent of recoveries contained a single file and realized customers were using Backblaze to access their files remotely," said Chief Executive Gleb Budman in a statement. Backblaze's Web interface already lets people retrieve files, but the iOS app will extend the ability to mobile devices.


Backblaze still is chiefly about backup rather than synchronizing files across multiple devices. For example, it keeps copies of files for 30 days, letting you step back to older versions or recover deleted ones. But the iPhone app does nudge BackBlaze a step closer to the world of DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, and other services people use to remotely access files.


According to Backblaze, the app lets people do the following:


• See all PC and Mac computers they currently back up.


• Select files from these computers and their external hard drives.


• View and download these photos, songs, movies, and other documents.


• Access previous versions of these files.


• Print, text, e-mail, post to Facebook and Twitter, or save files to the camera roll.


The app is scheduled for release within several weeks, the company said.


Backblaze currently has backed up 45,000,000GB of data, more conveniently expressed as 45 exabytes.

Creepy realistic vampire baby dolls are immortal

Thanks to "Twilight," vampires are more popular than ever. It's only natural that people would want their own vampire babies, isn't it? OK, maybe not, but there is a niche market out there for vampire baby dolls. I'm not talking about action figures or stuffed toys, I'm talking about dolls so realistic you'll feel like you've crossed the Uncanny Valley and emerged from the other side.


Artist Bean Shanine runs the Twisted Bean Stalk Nursery, a site devoted to her unholy baby creations. She takes Reborn doll kits and transforms them into monstrosities. Reborns are incredibly realistic, making Shanine's transformations all the more creepy.




The vampire Reborns all have lifelike paint jobs, but their otherworldly origins show in their pointy teeth and red eyes. There's something very unsettling about these dolls. If you get one, you might want to sleep with one eye open.


While Shanine specializes in little bloodsuckers, she has also branched out into other areas, like zombie babies. She even created a set of "Avatar" twins with blue faces and bodies.


Owning your own monster baby doesn't come cheap. Prices vary depending on the size of the Reborn baby, whether it has open eyes, and whether it has rooted hair. Preemies start at $650. If you want to bypass the terrible twos, then a 4- or 5-year-old monster child will cost you at least $1,500. Still, that's cheaper than a real child and you don't have to start a college fund.

Apple's Tim Cook seeks the 'mother of all opportunities'

In a meeting with employees at Apple's headquarters, CEO Tim Cook reportedly addressed the steep drop in the company's stock price that came after Apple posted $54.5 billion in sales last quarter and $13.1 billion in profit -- both records. As reported by 9to5 Mac, Cook took a shot at the highly lucrative oil industry in his cheerleading efforts. "The only companies that report better quarters pump oil," Cook reportedly said. "I do not know about you all, but I do not want to work for those companies."


Predictably, creating and manufacturing the most beloved technology gadgets is viewed as more personally and professionally fulfilling by Silicon Valley than drilling, refining and distributing the fuels that power the planet. An
iPad is cool and innovative, whereas a gallon of gasoline is a polluting liquid gold one cannot live without.

Apple and oil giants like ExxonMobile are in a rarified club, generating enormous amounts of revenue and profit. After Apple's recent stock price drop, ExxonMobile replaced Apple as the most valued company, with a market capitalization of about $417 billion compared to Apple's $412 billion.


But as Cook likes to say, following in the footsteps of Steve Jobs, Apple has higher aspirations than just turning silicon, or oil, into profits.


"The most important thing to Apple is to make the best products in the world that enrich customers' lives. That's our high order bit," Cook said during the Jan. 23 Apple Q1 earnings call. "That means that we aren't interested in revenue for revenue's sake. We can put the Apple brand on a lot of things and sell a lot more stuff, but that's not what we're here for. We want to make only the best products."


The question now is whether that make-the-best-products mission will translate into a strong stock performance any time soon. Of course, making Wall Street happy is not only about making the best products. It's also a game of setting expectations and then exceeding them, something Apple had down to science for many years.


That pattern could get a shot in the arm with some new products and updates, says Nomura Security's Stuart Jeffrey. But that's unlikely to happen right away.


"To re-accelerate growth, Apple likely needs to launch new products, yet few seem likely before June," Jeffrey said in a note to investors last week. "iOS 7 could have the greatest impact, yet recent management changes suggest a major advance is unlikely in the near-term. A China Mobile deal could also boost the stock, yet the timing of this remains uncertain...this leaves only a $300 iPhone or a premium iPhone as likely catalysts."



For the near-term Cook appears to be betting that the iPad, which was introduced three years ago, will fuel Apple's growth engine. In last week's earnings call, he described the iPad as the "mother of all opportunities" in reference to taking advantage of the shrinking PC market.


"On iPad in particular, we have the mother of all opportunities here, because the Windows market is much, much larger than the
Mac market is," Cook said. "And I think it is clear that it's already cannibalizing some, and I think there's a tremendous amount of more opportunity there and as you know I've said for two or three years now that I believe the
tablet market will be larger than the PC market at some point and I still believe that. And you can see by the growth in tablets and the pressure on PCs that those lines are beginning to converge."

Cook noted that last quarter Apple fell short on fulfilling demand for the iPad mini, but he expects to fix that problem this quarter. Apple sold 22.86 million iPads last quarter, up from 15.4 million in the same quarter of 2011. The company did not break out the number of iPad minis sold, but it's clear that the smaller iPad is helping to drag Apple's overall iPad margins downward.

Expectations are that Apple will refresh the iPad family in the second half of the year, and sell more than 100 million iPads for the calendar year, driven in part by cannibalizing sales of Macs and Windows PCs. Since the iPad began shipping in April 2010, Apple has sold more than 121 million units.

But Apple is facing increased competition and margin pressure as the smartphone and tablet categories mature. In Singapore and Hong Kong, for example, iPad and iPhone market share have been falling over the last year as Android-based devices pick up momentum, according to StatCounter.

If Apple is to maintain its momentum, Cook and team need to replicate the unique successes of the iPhone and iPad, getting a head start on competitors by spawning new markets. Some speculate that an Apple TV solution will be the next "mother of all opportunities." Perhaps Apple's version of Google Glass, or other kinds of wearable devices will keep Apple at the head of consumer adoption of emerging technologies. Cook invokes the cone of silence on Apple's future breakthroughs.

Regarding Apple TV, Cook said last week, "I have said in the past this is an area of intense interest for us, and it remains that. And I tend to believe that there's a lot we can contribute in this space, and so we continue to pull the string and see where it leads us. But I don't want to be more specific."

Cook can continue to pull the string, but it's uncertain whether he can produce the next big thing, another "mother of all opportunities," needed to maintain Apple's cool factor and superior margins. Ultimately, Cook's success as CEO will be judged on how well he does inventing the future rather than exploiting the past.

Is your hotel trying to choke you with an iPhone app?

Some like it cold.


It's not everyone's idea of comfort, but sitting in a cool hotel room -- especially when it's hot outside -- can offer a certain pleasure. At least for me.


It's a pleasure that a certain group of people want to deny me. They're called hotel owners.


Hotel owners, it seems, are rather fonder of making a cool profit.


It's bad enough when the room has no windows you can open. However, an ever-increasing trend is for hotels to restrict how cold you can make your room temperature.


You click furiously on the thermostat's "down" arrow and it makes like a prison guard.


Recently, I stayed in a hotel where it was verboten to have less than 67 degrees in your room.


To me, 67 degrees is balmy and barmy. So I called the front desk and wondered whether an engineer might help me in my unreasonable quest to choose the temperature in my room.


When he arrived he took one look and said: "Yes, 67 degrees. That's the hotel policy."


"But my policy is a little different," I explained. "I have blood that boils easily."


"Hotel policy," he repeated.


I gave him a look that explained my blood was already far beyond 67 degrees.


An hour later, his boss arrived. I pointed to the thermostat. He nodded caringly and said: "Hotel policy."


"Sir," I began. "If I owned a restaurant and you ordered fish and chips and I brought them to you cold, would you get annoyed? Would you send them back?"


Look, it was the first thing that came into my head. It was hot in that room. I wasn't thinking so clearly.


"Well, yes," he replied. "But this is hotel policy for all floors. It's 67 degrees."


"My policy is cold fish and chips," I repeated.


He looked at me as if I had drifted in from the Planet PoohBah.


I asked him whether there was anything he could do, you know, just for me. Because I am clearly mad. In the insane sense.


Could he not perform some feat of engineering because I am a little unusual, a little excessively human?


He pulled out his iPhone. I assumed he was going to call some men in dark suits who would attempt to bring my head down to my knees and my blood down to 32 degrees.


Instead, he said: "Look, it's all on this iPhone app. You see, here I can control the temperature in the whole hotel."


"So is it a floor-by-floor thing?" I wondered.


"Oh, no. I can change the temperature in every room," he explained, unwisely but helpfully.


"This is nothing more than a money-saving thing, isn't it?" I whispered.


He nodded.



More Technically Incorrect


Perhaps fed up of my insistently polite European accent, he looked up and sighed: "How cold do you want it?"


"60 degrees," I said. "I want the option to make the temperature in here to go down to 60 degrees."


With one touch of his iPhone, it was done. Suddenly, the down arrow on my thermostat was free to slide toward perfect coolness and he slid away, perhaps regretting he'd shown me the truth.


I can understand that some people carelessly leave the aircon or the heating on all day, when they're not in their hotel rooms. I can understand that hotels are businesses. But the essence of staying in a hotel is comfort.


Temperature shouldn't be any different from the need for hypoallergenic pillows, clean sheets, respect for the "Do Not Disturb" sign and a massive array of exciting movies for all ages on the TV.


So if you happen to be one of those people who simply prefer a little global cooling in your hotel room, it may well be that you need to invite the Head of Maintenance up to your room for a quick chat.


You know, about cold fish and chips.

Oppo BDP-105: Not your average Blu-ray player

Even by Oppo's high standards the BDP-105 is an extraordinary Blu-ray player. Sure, it's loaded with up-to-the-second features -- 4K upscaling, 2D-to-3D conversion, and a high-quality USB 2.0 digital-to-analog converter -- but what really makes the Oppo special is the sound. Pop the cover and look inside and you'll see why. Most of the 17-pound component's chassis space is devoted to the audio circuitry. That's nice, but the audio advantages will be completely irrelevant if you connect the BDP-105 to your receiver with a HDMI cable (the digital-to-analog conversion would then be handled in the receiver). The 105 was designed for buyers still using older $1,000 or $2,000 receivers from the days before HDMI connectivity, that would like to hear the Blu-rays' high-resolution DTS Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD soundtracks at their best. Since the audio won't be transmitted over the HDMI cable, you would run audio cables between the 105's seven- or five-channel analog outputs and the AV receiver's analog inputs.

Or you could forgo the receiver entirely and hook up the BDP-105 directly to a five- or seven-channel power amplifier. That approach would produce better sound quality, but would lack the connectivity, flexibility, and convenience of today's better receivers. Still, the BDP-105/power amp combo would sound better and be more powerful than most top-of-the-line receivers. The 105's connectivity options won't match any decent receiver, but its connectivity suite is a lot more extensive than most Blu-ray players. The Oppo has two HDMI inputs, so you can connect external devices such as set-top boxes and network streaming devices, three USB 2.0 ports, coaxial and optical digital inputs for satellite boxes, televisions, video-game consoles, etc., and there's a built-in headphone amplifier. The BDP-105's extensive bass management options are on par with a lot of AV receivers. The player's digital volume control is easy to use.


For my listening tests, I hooked up the BDP-105 ($1,199) with an assortment of self-powered Audioengine and Emotiva monitor speakers, and a Hsu subwoofer. With this setup I didn't need to use an AV receiver or separate power amp, but the Raconteurs' "Live at Montreux" Blu-ray was vivid and very live sounding. The system's freewheeling dynamics were really impressive, and the surround mix on King Crimson's "Red" DVD-A projected a remarkably seamless wrap-around soundstage. Each instrument was precisely focused in a near 360-degree sound environment.



The BDP-105 has full speaker setup and bass management options, just like an AV receiver.

Classical music on SACD was just as impressive, the front three speakers produced a three-dimensional soundstage with lots of depth, and string tone was top notch. Dramatic movies on Blu-ray and DVD sounded great. I plugged headphones into the BDP-105, but the sound wasn't special, Schiit Audio's $99 Magni headphone amp was a lot better.


The $499 Oppo BDP-103 shares most of the BDP-105's features, but lacks the upgraded digital-to-analog converters, so if you're planning on using HDMI to connect the player to your receiver, buy the 103, and save $700. You can use the 103's 7.1 analog outputs with an old high-end receiver lacking HDMI connectivity, but the 103's digital converters are a step down from the ones in the 105.


The BDP-105 is an update of the Oppo BDP-95, and the new one has lots of features the old player lacks, but the two players sound about the same. Oppo still has 95s in stock and sells them for $799.

School officials don't always do their homework.


Errors creep in -- sometimes creepy ones.


Still, who cannot feel a pang of guffaw-suppressing empathy for whomever wrote an e-mail on behalf of the Chicago Public Schools system?


As CBS Chicago sniggers it, parents were being notified by the Schools system of adjustments to the Illinois Standards Achievement Test.


Helpfully, the e-mail notification included a link to the Illinois State Board of Education Web site.



More Technically Incorrect


Perhaps, though, there was a copy-paste failure. Or perhaps the author decided to type out the whole link. Or perhaps... well, anyway.


Somehow, an extra letter was added to the link, which led to something less than a happy ending.


For this link directed parents to a site -- Isbel.com -- where a group "works together to explore and enrich the modern woman's sex life and sensuality."


I am fairly sure that the Chicago Public Schools system wasn't suggesting that certain mothers of the kids needed to expand their sexual horizons.


I am also fairly sure that this site featured an image of the Kama Sutra -- which is not on the school syllabus.


The Schools system apologized and sent out an amended e-mail.


I wonder how many new enthusiasts Isbel.com secured before the amended e-mail went out.

French court tells Twitter it must hand over names of racist tweeters

Twitter must hand over the identities of users in France who post racist tweets, a French court ruled today.


According to AFP, the court's ruling stemmed from a test case "that pitted the right to free speech against laws banning hate speech," and answered a petition made in October by the French Union of Jewish Students (UEJF), which had claimed that many anti-Semitic tweets had violated the law in the European country.


The UEJF had demanded that Twitter do a better job of policing obviously anti-Semitic tweets.


Twitter said today in a statement that "we are currently reviewing the court's decision."



In October, Twitter was awash in anti-Semitic French-language tweets tied to the hashtag "#unbonjuif" ("a good Jew"), prompting many to argue that social media in general, and Twitter in particular, are cesspools of objectionable content (article in French). A big element of the complaints aimed at Twitter was that it was too hard for users to report objectionable tweets.


At the time, Twitter rebutted that contention, pointing out that a simple Google search for, say, "Report Twitter behavior" returns a number of different methods for reporting, or flagging, abusive posts or users.


Twitter also said in October that it is concerned about egregious user behavior and can, and sometimes does, take action against perpetrators of such activity. The company said, for example, that it can police trending topics, proactively removing any such terms that are considered offensive from its highly influential real-time list of popular subjects, such as "swastika." Today, AFP reported that Twitter had deleted some of the anti-Semitic tweets in October.


But Twitter has also long emphasized freedom of user expression, and the company said in October that on its own, there's nothing about a term like "good Jew" that's inherently anti-semitic. In a case like the one in France, it's up to users to report abusive tweets, the company has contended, and it reserves the right not to take action unless such posts are clearly illegal in the country where the tweet was reported.


It is almost certainly that position that led the UEJF to take its case to the French courts.

Tech talk 'more confusing than a foreign language'

You might be familiar with the term "megabyte."


For some, though, it represents an emotional megadeath.


You might know what an ISP is, but some need ESP in order to explain to themselves what this actually means.


This, at least, is the conclusion of a deeply disturbing piece of research, performed in the U.K. on behalf of Carphone Warehouse's Geek Squad.




More Technically Incorrect


As the Daily Mail translates it, real, normal human beings are more emotionally disturbed when faced with tech talk than with the Greek for "good night" or the Russian for "cheers."


It seems they begin to perspire. The electrics in their brain begin to overload. The researchers calculated that these people found it 42 percent more stressful and confusing to decipher geek than Greek.


I can sense a little kvetching and stirring in the audience, so please let me make it worse for you.


This piece of research claims that when they heard terms such as "OS" and "plug-in," the men were 138 percent more stressed than the women.


It is customary here to accept all research with at least as much salt as McDonald's puts on its fries.


So might I temper your temper by explaining that there were a mere 16 respondents in this fine scientific study.


However, Carphone Warehouse's Geek Squad has decided that the 10 most confusing tech terms from the research just have to go. The company is simply removing them from its dialogue with customers.


Here they are:

Giottos: Honey, I shrunk the tripod



Good news for shutterbug travelers with limited luggage space: Popular tripod maker Giottos has just released a new range of "YTL" tripods that utilize a new Y-shaped center column design that's 30 percent smaller than the cylindrical columns found in typical tripods. This allows the tripod legs to be tucked into the center column closer, making the tripod more compact and allowing it to be easily stowed.

While the center column sees a reduction in size, the company claims the new design does not compromise the tripod's stability and strength. The new tripod range can support cameras from 11 pounds to 22 pounds.

The "YTL" range will come in three- or four-section variants and feature a two- or three-way center column. Prices will range from $160 to $350 depending on whether you choose the aluminum or the lighter carbon fiber version. Giottos tripods are available from select online stores in the U.K.

Trying to find parking in San Francisco sometimes feels likes a car-based version of "Survivor." It's not pretty. Cars block driveways, drivers forget to curb their wheels, lights get left on, and meters run out. These are all reasons why you might want to contact a vehicle's owner. If everyone in San Francisco signed up for CurbTXT, then it would be easy to get in touch.


Drivers can sign up for CurbTXT by registering their license plates and phone numbers. A sticker on the
car gives people an anonymous way to contact the driver through text messaging by referencing the plate number. The service forwards the message to the owner.



CurbTXT is a sweet idea. It could turn San Francisco into a wonderland of parking good deeds, helping people avoid fines and giving them the opportunity to move their vehicles before they get towed.


CurbTXT faces an uphill battle as far as adoption. It also opens up the possibility of prank texts like "OMG your car is full of monkeys!!!" To combat that, users can report inappropriate messages and abusers will be blocked.


According to the Evernote blog, dozens of texts have been sent through the service since it launched last fall. That's not much, but CurbTXT founders have chatted with people from the San Francisco board of supervisors about getting city support for the project. Until then, the service is getting users through flyers and word-of-mouth.
